I can’t believe it’s actually happening but we’re finally getting the follow-up to, in my opinion, the most fun game for the Nintendo Wii. Ironically, it was the game that cost nothing and came with the console for free but there was something about heated battles in tennis, bowling, boxing, baseball, and golf that kept you coming back for more.
It’s no secret that technology, especially in video games, has come a long way since the release of the Nintendo Wii, and subsequently Wii Sports, in 2006. So how is Nintendo going to adapt their fan-favorite game to their groundbreaking Nintendo Switch console?
Thankfully for us, Nintendo released an announcement trailer to share which of our favorite features were coming back on Nintendo Switch Sports!
A New Twist On An Old Favorite
The first aspect of this trailer that stuck out to me is the edition of online play. I remember some absolutely heated tennis matches taking place with my immediate family and you mean to tell me I can play, and trash talk, against strangers now too? Sign me up.
The soccer game mode basically looks like the Nintendo equivalent Rocket League with your Mii which sounds like a complete blast. The leg strap accessory allows you to kick the ball as if you’re actually playing soccer, and probably kick the living room coffee table and hurt yourself, to the delight of everyone in your household watching you. I’m glad to see Nintendo Switch Sports is following up its predecessor’s reputation for comedic household injuries.
I’m definitely sad to see Nintendo won’t be bringing back boxing but I’m very intrigued by the addition of chambara! It essentially looks like American Gladiator-style sword fighting to knock your opponent off of a platform into the swimming pool below. I’m sure this will get heated between players and lead to a lot of highly competitive fun. Maybe Nintendo will even bring back Wii Sports boxing phenom, Matt, to terrorize players again.
