After breaking her neck in a backyard pool diving accident in August 2010, Rebecca Northern was numb and fighting to stay conscious when her Jack Russell terrier Selena came to her rescue. Northern told CNN that the little terrier wedged herself under her owner’s shoulder and swam her to the shallow end of the pool. Selena then helped Northern get out of the pool entirely. When Northern’s mother returned home shortly after, she was rushed to a local hospital. Watch the full video here.

Allegedly, two men rang Duke’s doorbell and started assaulting him, and that’s when Charlie flew in- squawking and biting the intruders (He even took a chunk out of one of their arms!) and eventually succeed in scaring them both off.
Ian Thomas was struck by lightning and knocked unconscious for 15 to 20 minutes, before his faithful dog Monty guided him home, according to The Sun. In October 2011 Thomas said he leaned on Monty, letting Monty take some of his weight, for the 100-yard walk back to Thomas’s house, where his wife, Sharen, then rushed him to the hospital. Tami Akanamu and her Shih-Tzu, Babu, barely escaped a March 2011 tsunami that destroyed the Japanese district where they lived. According to Lifewithdogs.tv, Akanuma says Babu began barking and signaling toward the door after feeling an off-shore earthquake. Babu allegedly dragged Akanuma in the opposite direction than they normally walked, straining against her leash to urge Akanuma to walk faster and faster. In March 2011, a tsunami destroyed the Japanese district where Tami Akanuma was living. According to Akanuma, her Shih Tzu Babu started barking and signalling for the door after feeling an off-shore earthquake.
German Shepard Buddy ran out of his owner Ben Heinrichs’s Alaskan home when Heinrichs’s workshop caught fire in April 2010. The faithful dog spotted a state trooper, according to The Telegraph, and helped guide him to the burning property. Read the full story here.

Arizona resident Kay Harrison stepped onto her front porch in April 2010 to find an agitated rattlesnake. Her Catahoula, Sammy, quickly jumped in front of her. Harrison told the Arizona Republic that the dog was bitten on the head by the snake, and was rushed to the vet to be treated. Sammy has since made a full recovery. Read the full story here.
Cherry Woods was walking to her home in Pearland, Texas, in June 2010 when two large pit bulls attacked her outside her door. Woods told KHOU-TV that her cat, Lima, stepped in to save her life, hissing and scratching at one of the dogs until both were distracted by the feline. In September 2011, Idaho resident Debbie Denning was asleep on her living room couch and could not hear the cries for help from her pregnant 15-year-old daughter, Codi Robertson, according to the Houston Chronicle. Robertson woke up with what she thought were the chills, before quickly losing consciousness. The family’s American Eskimo dog, Mickey, heard Roberston’s calls, and woke up Denning, who found her daughter having a pregnancy-related seizure. Denning rushed Robertson to the emergency room, where the baby was delivered two months premature. Both mom and baby were fine, thanks to Mickey. Read the full story here.
Austin Forman, an 11-year-old boy from a small town north of Vancouver, Canada, was fetching wood from the backyard in January 2010 when he spotted what he thought was a dog in the distance. As the animal approached, he realized it was a cougar, many of which inhabit the surrounding forests, but normally stay away from the towns. As the cougar was about to pounce, the Forman family dog, Angel, jumped to Austin’s rescue, he told the Today Show. The cougar had Angel’s head within her jaws, and they began to fight. In 2010, Austin, Texas resident Paul Horton attempted a small jump on his bike, a move he had done many times before. But this time, Horton fell over the handlebars, hitting his head and knocking himself unconscious. His golden retriever Yogi had been running alongside him. When Horton came to, he was unable to move, but faithful Yogi was still by his side, he told KVUE News. The suspect had reportedly cut telephone and cable wires in the neighborhood, and was attempting to enter the family’s basement from the backside of the house when Hercules started growling and then chased the man out of the yard.
